The Properties Of Autograft Without the Associated Risks

Osteocel relies on proprietary technology to produce a viable bone matrix product that preserves the native stem cell population found in marrow rich bone. It is similar to autograft not only because it is biologically active, but because it is the only product available that provides the three beneficial properties of autograft: osteoconduction, osteoinduction, and osteogenesis. Osteocel allows surgeons to offer benefits of these properties to their patients without the discomfort and potential complications of autograft harvesting, in addition to eliminating the time spent on a secondary procedure. Processing methods include selective immunodepletion to remove red and white blood cells, resulting in a bone matrix that retains the native mesenchymal stem cell population. Osteocel only contains cells and tissue from a single donor and at no time in the process are cells or tissue from multiple donors pooled. Furthermore, the cells in Osteocel have not been cultured or manipulated - methods which could cause them to lose their natural osteogenic potential.

Osteogenesis

Every lot of Osteocel is tested for osteogenesis (bone formation).

Viable Cell Content

The osteogenic potential arises from the secondary contribution the stem cells in Osteocel provide. Following processing of marrow-rich bone, release testing demonstrates this potential. Every lot is tested to ensure that the cells are viable and osteogenic.

Osteocel Purity

Processing dramatically reduces components that could stimulate an immune response. The cellular identity is characterized with fluorescent activated cell sorting (FACS).

Osteogenesis In Vivo

A posterolateral spinal fusion model in athymic rats demonstrated bone growth and fusion following implantation of Osteocel. Radiographs showed fusion while integration of Osteocel with the host bone and cellular repair activity was evident on histology.
